Dear Rima,

I received your letter yesterday. You wanted to know many things about our friends in Dhaka. Dhaka is the capital of Bangladesh. Once it was the capital of undivided Bengal in period emperor Jahangir. It stands on the Buriganga. I know, you visited Dhaka about ten years ago. If you come here now, you will see a lot of changes here.

Many roads and ways have been constructed here. Many large and tall buildings have been built but many tanks and ponds that you saw in the heart of city have disappeared. Many installations have been made on the lakes and ponds. As a result, the beauty of the capital is no more seen here. Thousands of buses, minibuses, trucks and other kinds of vehicles run in the streets and pollute the air.

The horns of these vehicles also cause sound pollution. There are many large factories and industries which pollute water and air throwing poisonous chemicals and waste products. Human wastes and bad drainage system contaminate water regularly. Fishes are not found now in the Buriganga. People in Dhaka city are attacked with fatal diseases.

All these are the consequences of rapid growth of population. No more today.

Sincerely yours,
Sima

Dear Rajon,

I am glad to receive your letter today. In your letter you have stated that you are afraid because of the ensuing exam. I would like to  suggest you not to take it seriously. If you take it easy you will see that you have become normal and are getting back your courage. You have written that you have taken good preparation.

Remember that much of your future depends on your HSC result. Maintaining regularity and taking physical exercise is essential to get a healthy life. You should also remember that nothing can be gained without giving much effort to it. You are a good boy, no doubt, but to do a good result is quite different.

A good boy watches T.V and plays other games when he prepares his lessons. I think that you are going on with full speed with a view to obtaining good marks in all subjects. As you spend your precious time fruitfully you will get your dues in time. No more today.

Yours ever,
Faruk

Dear Rumki,

I am glad to hear that you are enjoying yourself in a tea garden of Sylhet. I am here in our village to which your letter was redirected. I was reluctant to come here, but having done so I feel very happy. Born and brought up in Dhaka as I was, I had never known this village where my father and grandfather had lived. It is such a change for me that I have already liked the place so much and taken decision to spend the rest of the time before the publication of our result here in this village.

The air is fresh here. Here are lots of fresh vegetables that we can eat. My grandmother takes a keen interest in cooking and making cakes. There is a well kept pond beside our house. My cousins’ take me for a dip everyday and I am trying to learn swimming. The local high school is not far from here and the school has a library. I am getting lots of books to read. Write soon as you can. Best luck.

Yours ever,
Chumki.

Dear Farhana,

It was very nice of you to have written to me. You will be glad to know that I got the first prize in the debate competition in English in our college on the topic “Importance of Learning English in our society”. Let me briefly tell you about what I said there.

English is an international language. Most of the knowledge of the modern civilization is available in English. If we avoid learning English, we will keep ourselves aloof from the civilized world. Our education will suffer most because almost all the books necessary for higher education are written in English. It is quite impossible to replace English with Bangla overnight.

It is unfortunate but true that English is being underestimated which is causing the degradation of its standard. As a result, the standard of education itself is coming down. It is high time we realized the importance of English and took necessary measures to upgrade its standard.

Sincerely Yours,
Shahida

Dear Ahsan,

I had the grimmest shock of my life the other day. A few boys of about 10 to 12 were playing with a tennis ball in a corner in the park opposite to our house. Suddenly one of them jumped over the railing and ran into the middle of the street. Just at this time, a private motor car was passing along the place. The boy came right in front of it so suddenly and so unexpectedly that the driver had no time to stop the car before it was too late.

A loud cry of alarm was going forth from the people around. Along with a few others, I ran up to the place of the accident and helped to bring out the body from under the car. We also formed a ring around the driver in order to protect him from molestation. He was not at all to be blamed for the tragedy.

Within a few minutes the police arrived at the spot and took the car and the dead body to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital. The sickening sight has upset me so much that it rises up before my mind’s eyes even now and fills me with horror and pity. May the departed soul sleep in peace. Accept my love and best wishes.

Sincerely Yours,
Mabrur

Dear Farhana,

I received  your letter yesterday. In it you have expressed your inability to join us in the picnic. You also wanted to know my experience in the picnic. Dear Farhana, what a pleasure it would have been if you were in the midst of us! Really, we missed you very much. Anyhow here is a short description of the same.

We selected Sonargaon for the picnic spot. It is some twenty miles of Dhaka. We were about thirty five in number including one of our teachers. We reached there by bus at about 9 am with all necessary utensils and materials. After having reached there, we finished our breakfast by 9.30 am. We did not take any cook with us. Our Mathematics teacher, Mr. Anwar Hossain has a reputation as an expert in cooking. He helped us in cooking.

At about 2 pm the lunch was ready. By this time all of us became hungry. So, we all of us took our lunch with full appetite. After lunch, we went out for sightseeing. You know Sonargaon is a place of historical interest. It was once the capital of Bengal. The museum of Sonargaon charmed us most. We started for home at 5 pm after taking our tea.

Yours ever,
Shagun

Dear Farhana,

A few days ago, I had the opportunity to enjoy the feast and festivities arranged on the occasion of the marriage ceremony of the daughter of one of our rich and respected neighbours. The bridegroom’s party arrived at the bride’s house at 7.45 pm. When it had reached the entrance of the gate, a band of little boys and girls barred the door refusing the entrance. The children had to be won over with sweets and tips to secure entrance. Then the bridal guests were given seats. The bridegroom was given a special seat.

A little while later sweet sherbet was served to the guests. Now arrangements for solemnization of marriage began. But differences arose between the two parties over the terms of marriage. At last a settlement was reached through the match maker. Thereafter, the Quazi recited verses from the Holy Quran and solemnized the marriage. The bridegroom now stood up and saluted the guests and his new relations.

Then the guests were given a rich and delicious dinner. At about 10 pm, it came the call for ruyyat ceremony. When the ruyyat was over, the bridegroom left the house accompanied by his newly wedded bride. I was feeling delighted that the occasion gave me an opportunity to meet many people at one place and to enjoy a pleasant evening. No more today.

Yours ever,
Shahida

Dear Ahsan,

How do you do? Listen, I have some exciting things to tell you. Last week, we went to Bagerhat with my uncle and I had the opportunity to see the ‘Shatgombuj Mosque’ which is one of the most architectural beauties of Bangladesh.

The Mosque was built by Khan Jahan Ali. It stands on sixty pillars with its seventy seven exquisitely curved ‘Gombuj’ or domes and not ‘Shat’ or sixty as the name suggests. Its wall is two meters thick and the interior western wall is decorated with terracotta flowers and foliage.

There is also a lake like ‘dighi’. There is a saying that a horse was made to run before digging the ‘dighi’. It ran covering a distance and stood still. That distance was accepted as its length. So, it was named ‘Ghora dighi’. There are also many crocodiles in the ‘dighi’.

To speak the truth, we had a very exciting time there which is really a memorable experience.

Yours ever,
Mabrur
