Dear Amena,

Thanks a lot for your letter. You have praised cricket as the first game in the world. I don't like to dispute that, but it is not my favourite game. My two favourite games are badminton and chess. Badminton seems to me the best of all outdoor games. Football and hockey are too violent to suit me. Cricket is too slow. Tennis is childish.

But badminton provides you with plenty of exercise. It develops the quickness of eye and limb and it makes your brain active. Chess is the queen of games. I don't take any interest in card games. In spite of being called a selfish game of only two persons, chess interests me more. However, I don't see any wrong with chess. Bridge is not less selfish simply because of four players instead of two.

Many people say that chess is a slow game.  But no chess player even agree to this opinion. For an outsider, it looks slow to see two men sitting silent and making a move only every few minutes. But to the two players it is all the time intensely exciting. You are probably scoffing at me by now.

Yours ever,
Atik.

Dear Komol,

I have not heard from you for quite a long time. I hope you all are well. Last week I came back home after finishing our five day long river cruise which started from Dhaka Sadarghat. We went to the Sundarbans, the largest mangrove forest in the world. We sailed across different zigzag rivers and then again came back to Dhaka. It is indeed a thrilling experience I have ever had. Today I am writing you about this.

The tour was arranged as a part of our study tour. You might feel surprised at our choice of a river journey. Here are reasons why we chose a river journey. Bangladesh is a riverine country. Hundreds of rivers run across the country. These rivers provide a pleasant mood and a rare natural scene. There is a calm and quiet atmosphere prevail everywhere.

Hence a river journey is often enjoyable and fascinating. There is no such traffic jam by which our city life is often paralysed. While travelling by bus we run the risk of meeting accidents. But there is less fear of accidents in a river journey. It also has an educative value. One can develop a free and liberal attitude by having such a journey. No more today. I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours ever,
Neela.

Dear Raju,

Congratulations for scoring a good result in the examination. I am now in Chittagong. Next week I am going to Dhaka. Then I will meet you. Have you chosen your career? I think, you should depend on your own choice. If I were you, I would like to be an agriculturist.

Ours is an agricultural country. Most of the farmers are not educated. They do not know how to cultivate good crops. They still depend on the plough. If they use scientific instruments, they can grow more crops. Then our country will be self sufficient in food.

It is unfortunate but true that most of the brilliant students of our country do not realize this truth. They only want to be doctors, engineers or computer programmers. They neglect the truth. Since Bangladesh is a fertile country, we should focus on agriculture. Agriculture can bring a change to our economy.

Sincerely yours,
Shahid.

Dear Saju,

Today I am writing this letter in order to give you some valuable suggestions regarding value of time so that you can finish your work in time. If you turn the pages of history it will be clear to you that the great men of the world made the best use of time. Had they not been cautious about the value of time, they could not become great in life.

So, it is high time you made the best use of your time. If you put off the things which you can do today, you will never be able to do it. Many lost things can be regained but time once lost, is lost forever, it can never be regained. Besides, the value of time cannot be measured.

It is known to you that youth is said to be the seed time of life. If you sow good seeds in youth, you will be able to reap a good harvest. Those who idle away their time suffer in the long run. No more today. I believe you will give importance on value of time.

Yours ever,
Soma.

Dear Saju,

Winter is nearly here again. I remember the wonderful winter we all spent together. Everyone called us the ‘fabulous fours’. We were nearly always together talking to our experiences, eating peanuts and chips and looking out at the cold wintry weather. How full of fun were the times when we played badminton or rode our bicycles!

Unfortunately so much has changed in our lives. It has been five years since we were all together. Each and every one of us is now too busy to look up another’s whereabouts. I got your address while I was going through an old diary. May be you do not even live at this address still I am writing in vain hope of contacting you.

After father had died my family had to return to the village. I too had accepted my fate no matter how unhappy it made me. If you get this letter please write. I hope you have not forgotten me. I will be eagerly waiting for your letter. I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Yours ever,
Shahid.

Dear Juthi,

I arrived in Dhaka two months ago and I have been staying with my uncle in Uttara. My uncle works in a bank but at the moment he has taken a year’s study leave. He is doing a course in Business Management which started last month. I am having a good time in Dhaka. I have already visited most of the historical places here, like Lalbagh Fort and Ahsan Manzil.

I have liked the riverside at Sadarghat best of all because it reminds me of my own hometown traveled on the bus the other day when I met Rashed. Can you remember him? When we last saw him, he had been working for his father’s company. Now he is doing a special English course because he wants to go to Australia for higher study.

This afternoon we are going to see a football match together. I am really looking forward to it. I like Dhaka very much but I think it is very expensive. Take care.

Your loving friend,
Sathi

Dear Kajol,

Take my cordial love. Your letter is to hand. I am glad to learn that you are all well. Listen, I have already heard from a friend of ours that you not do not read newspapers. It is a great mistake. You are a student of class twelve. You know that we live in an age of science and technology but if we remain ignorant of the incidents happening in our country as well as in the world, we will be proved unfit for the world.

So, I advise you to read newspapers daily in order to be acquainted with the current affairs of the world. By reading newspaper, you can be able to know new scientific invention, economic development and political situation of our country. Without this kind of knowledge, you cannot cope with others. Articles and features on culture, literature, politics, sports, trade and commerce etc. will widen your outlook, remove narrowness of the mind and enrich your thought.

So, do not forget to read newspapers daily. I am pretty well and your other friends too are well.  Convey my best compliments to your mother and father and love to Roma.

Your loving friend,
Roma

Write a Letter to Your Son Letting Him Know the True Identity of a Gentleman

Write a Letter to Your Son Letting Him Know the True Identity of a Gentleman.

Dear Son,

I want to tell you about the identity of a gentleman. Hope you will improve yourself by going through this letter of mine. It is true that the quality of a man does not depend on his outward appearance, dress and manner. Generally it is believed that a man in fine dress is a gentleman. Even he may deserve appreciation for his external pose and manner.

But the real thing, in a true sense, is that an attractive figure of fine clothes is not the symbol of modesty. He may conceal his real character. He may in some respects be brute and savage inwardly. So, external appearance or figure cannot be a standard to comprehend or judge a man whether he is gentle or not. A person is regarded as a gentleman usually if he practises honesty and tolerance.

Fine dress or ornament may help a person to become gentle but if he lacks in morality, he is not admired in the society. So, to be truly handsome, a man has to prove himself through his actions, modesty, honesty, tolerance and sympathy. An evil minded man cannot be considered handsome in the society. Remember the old saying that all that glitters is not gold. So, you should not be misled by the outward appearance. No more today,

Yours ever,
Papa

Dear Any,

I have just got your letter. You have wanted to know about the rainy season of Bangladesh. The rainy season comprises two months called Ashar and Shrabon. The south-east monsoon blows over Bangladesh during the summer. The heat of summer evaporates the sea water. This vapor cools and condenses into clouds. The sky remains overcast with dark clouds. It starts raining in torrents.

Sometimes, it rains for some days. All the roads are submerged and covered with mud and they become slippery. Excessive rainfall is one of the causes of floods in our country. Crops are damaged by floods. Our government has taken some measures but the problem lies elsewhere. All the corn fields of the country go under water and the villages of Bangladesh look like islands. Thank you.

Your loving friend,
Suchi

Dear Sahir,

It was quite long since we had received any letter from you. Yesterday your progress report of Second Semester Examination from your principal reached to us. We have become very shocked to know from the report that you have failed almost in all subjects. We had although a high opinion about you, but you disappointed us greatly. I am sure that you keep bad company and while away your time.

You should remember that time once gone can never be got back and bad habit once formed is not easy to give up. I would like to remind you that we belong to a middle class family. Our educational expenses are borne with great difficulty. We have to stand on our own feet.

We must not do anything which pains our parents. You should know that only the fittest survive. Time is not long ahead when you will have to earn. Without proper education you cannot expect to get a good job. Student life is the proper time to get proper education. So, you must be sincere and regular to your studies. Wishing you all the best.

Yours ever,
Salam
